Abstract
There are controversies regarding physiological weight loss after birth. Factors influencing this weight loss include the initiation of breastfeeding and/or the technique used, type of feeding, and mode of delivery, among others. The objective of this study is to analyze birth weight loss in term newborns during rooming-in. This is an observational, analytical, prospective cohort study evaluating birth weight loss in term newborns between 37 weeks and 41 weeks plus 6 days of gestational age who did not require admission to the neonatal unit, born via vaginal delivery or cesarean section. Weight loss was calculated as the percentage difference between birth weight and subsequent weight measurements taken in the first 72 hours. Student´s t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey; spost-hoc test were used to compare samples. From the analyzed data, we can conclude that there appear to be no significant differences in neonatal weight loss based on mode of delivery, gestational age at birth, or birth weight.
