Abstract

Introduction: acute urinary retention (AUR) is defined as the inability to voluntarily micturate for more than 12 hours, accompanied by the palpation of a painful distended bladder. It is an uncommon condition in the pediatric population; current literature suggests that urinary tract infection is the primary etiology to rule out when evaluating an episode of AUR.
Objectives: the primary objective of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics, etiology, and treatment management of AUR cases in the pediatric population of the Police Hospital (Hospital Policial) between 2012 and 2021.
Methodology: an observational, descriptive, and retrospective study was conducted. All patients aged 1 month to 13 years and 11 months who were admitted for AUR or who developed AUR during hospitalization for another condition were included.
Results: a total of 14 patients were included (8 males and 6 females). Patient age ranged from 2 to 13 years, with a median age of 5.5 years. Regarding the etiology of AUR, the most frequent cause was urinary tract infection (UTI), with most cases occurring between 2 and 4 years of age. This condition demonstrated a low incidence rate among admissions at our hospital (1.8 per 1,000 hospital admissions).
Conclusions: AUR was an uncommon entity in the studied pediatric population, and its most frequent cause was UTI.
